Teacher: Mrs Jones

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Tonks

Welcome to our exciting classroom where we enjoy learning and have lots of fun. 1J always work hard and we enjoy our time at school.

We currently have ‘The Arctic’ as our role play area but it is soon to change to a Travel Agents. Our reading area is inhabited by a friendly dragon who loves to listen to us read. He especially likes it when we use expression in our reading. The classroom has lots of resources for us to use and we enjoy using them to help us to learn.

Our PE day is currently Wednesday and children will need their PE kits.

What We Are Learning

Our topic at the moment is ‘To the Rescue’ where we are learning all about lifeboats and history through the story of Grace Darling. We will be investigating the historical significance of Grace Darling and taking part in lots of role play to discover what life was like for her. So far we have found this very exciting and particularly enjoyed role playing the fateful night when Grace took part in a heroic rescue with her father.

Our topics over the summer term will be ‘Animal Allsorts’ and ‘Where shall we Go?’ which are sure to interest the children. The second is a geography based topic where we will have the opportunity to role play travelling around the world.

In English, we write in many different ways and for lots of different reasons. To help stimulate and engage us to write, we will read and explore the events and characters in a variety of picture and story books. We will be working hard to write interesting sentences using full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks and questions marks. We will also be learning to use commas in a sentence. Handwriting and letter formation is very important in year one and we are just beginning to join some of our letters together. We follow the ‘Penpals’ handwriting scheme and the children are very enthusiastic about this and really enjoy the sessions.

In Mathematics, we learn a lot about number and place value as this will help us to have a good foundation which can build on throughout our school life. We have been starting to solve calculations including addition and subtraction using a number line, 100 square or by using other methods we learn in class.. Throughout the year we will also be looking at 2D and 3D shapes and using our mathematical vocabulary to talk about them.

Helping Us at Home

We would love it if you could help your children to count backwards and forwards to 100 from different starting numbers as this would really help with our learning. It would also help your child to practise counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. It is important that your child writes numbers accurately as well as words for numbers to twenty.
