1H

Teacher: Miss Hayes

TA: Mrs Bateman-Price & Mrs Payne

Hello and welcome to 1H’s class page. We are a very happy, caring and hard-working class.

Within our classroom, we have some lovely areas to support our learning. We have a toy story reading area with an array of stories to get stuck into and practise our reading skills. Our role play area is linked to our Memory Box topic and is currently a Victorian toy shop. It’s just like stepping back in time! We have lots of old toys such as dominos, wooden dolls and jigsaws. We also have the opportunity to practise our counting and money skills by paying for toys at the till.

In 1H we love to bring our learning alive and like to get up and outside whenever we have the chance. We will be completing lots of practical maths and science activities outside and applying our knowledge from the classroom. We are very excited to complete our investigation about the different size of raindrops.

Our P.E day is currently Thursday and we need to have our PE kits in school for this.

What are we learning?

In our English lessons, we will have the opportunity to read lots of different styles of writing such as Fiction, Non-fiction and Poetry. To help stimulate and engage us to write, we will read and explore the events and characters in a variety of picture and story books. This will help us to use our imagination and create our own fabulous writing. In Year 1 we are working very hard to remember to use capital letters and full stops and finger spaces in our sentences. We are also working hard to make sure that our handwriting is neat and our letters are formed correctly. We also try to use the conjunction ‘and’ in our sentences as well as exciting adjectives to make our writing even more special.

In Mathematics, we are starting to learn about addition, subtraction and place value. We will begin to order numbers and to find one more and one less than a number. To help us with our addition and subtraction, we will be using counters and number lines to count forwards or backwards.
In Big Maths, we will be linking our learning to our story this term, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. We will begin by learning about shape and measure and asking questions such as ‘who has the heaviest chair? How can we measure it? In our mental arithmetic we will be learning to count all the way up to 100, forwards and backwards. We will also begin to count in 2’s and 10’s.

Our current topic is ‘Memory Box.’ We will be learning about life in the past as well as our memories of our own past. We will be talking about our own memories and how they may be different to the memories of our parents and grandparents.

Helping us at home
You can help us at home by listening to us read at least three times a week and practising our weekly spellings with us.
For Maths, we would love if you could help your children to count forwards and backwards to 100. We will also begin to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Thank you for your continued support with your child’s learning.
