1H

Teacher: Miss Hayes

TA: Mrs Price

We are a very caring, cheerful and lively class. In our fabulous classroom, we have some different areas which support our learning. We have a role play area which is currently a ‘Mad Hatter’s tea party.’ It is our imagination area where we can act as different characters or get stuck into some challenges with our friends. We can also practise our speaking and social skills by speaking and listening to our friends.
We have a cosy reading area in 1H where we can practice reading stories with our friends. Our reading area is also Alice and Wonderland themed! We can fall into an exciting book down the rabbit hole and into our reading wonderland.

In 1H we love to bring our learning alive and like to get up and outside whenever we have the chance. When learning outside, we further our learning by doing lots of practical investigations.

Our P.E day is currently Wednesday.

What are we learning:

In our English lessons, we will have the opportunity to read lots of different styles of writing such as Fiction, Non-fiction and Poetry. To help stimulate and engage us to write, we will read and explore the events and characters in a variety of picture and story books. This will help us to use our imagination and create our own fabulous writing. In Year 1, we are working very hard to remember to use capital letters and full stops and finger spaces in our sentences. We are also working hard to make sure that our handwriting is neat and our letters are formed correctly. We also try to use the conjunction ‘and’ in our sentences as well as exciting adjectives to make our writing even more special.

In Mathematics, we are starting to learn about addition, subtraction and place value. We will begin to order numbers and to find one more and one less than a number. To help us with our addition and subtraction, we will be using counters and number lines to count forwards or backwards. In Big Maths, we will be linking our learning to our story this term, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. We will begin by learning about shape and measure and asking questions such as ‘who has the heaviest chair? How can we measure it? In our mental arithmetic, we will be learning to count all the way up to 100, forwards and backwards. We will also begin to count in 2’s and 10’s.

Our current topic is ‘Bright Lights Big Cities’. We are learning all about big cities, in particular, London. During our topic launch day, we experienced life as a queen and had a royal tea party. It was so much fun and we got to eat some delicious cakes! We will be learning all about special landmarks in London, transport and The Royal Family. We will also be learning about the UK as a whole, including countries and flags of the UK.

Helping us at home
You can help us at home by listening to us read at least three times a week and practising our weekly spellings with us.
For Maths, we would love if you could help your children to count forwards and backwards to 100. We will also begin to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Thank you for your continued support with your child’s learning.
