Teacher: Miss Fowler-Hill

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Monaghan

Hello and welcome to 1F-H’s class page. We are a very caring, well behaved and cheerful class. In our classroom, we have lots of exciting areas to make our learning fun.

We have a cosy reading area, where we love reading stories to each other and practise reading aloud for our ESB badges. Our role play area is currently a shop, where we have been practising using money, to buy our chosen objects. We are very lucky to have some desktop computers in our classroom and we are learning to log on to the computers independently and control the mouse effectively. We love using ICT and are always keen to use IPad’s and laptops in our lessons. We are hoping to use the green screen and the 4D room, with the help of Mr Johnson, to create a news report based on Grace Darling, too.

Our lessons bring learning to life in 1F-H and we thoroughly enjoy being off our seats. When we can, we take our learning outside and do lots of practical investigations, to further our knowledge and experiences.

Our PE day is currently Wednesday.

What We Are Learning

In English, we get the opportunity to discover lots of different writing styles over the academic year (including fiction and non-fiction). To help stimulate and engage us to write, we will read and explore the events and characters in a variety of picture and story books. We will be working hard to write a sequence of sentences using full stops, capital letters and finger spaces. If we really try hard we will be able to use the conjunction ‘and’ and adjectives in our writing.

Handwriting in 1F-H is very important and we love to show off our fabulous efforts. We are just beginning to try joining our letters together by following our ‘Pen-Pals’ handwriting scheme.

In Mathematics, we are going to be looking at fractions, including 1 half and 1 quarter of shapes and numbers. We will start off by halving a chocolate cake and making sure that our halves are equal! After that we will be looking at applying our learning in word problems.

Our Arithmetic and Big Maths is going to be based around number. We will be counting from different given numbers, backwards and forwards, to 100. If we want an extra challenge we can use numbers up to 150!

Our topic at the moment is ‘To the Rescue’, where we are learning all about lifeboats and history through the story of Grace Darling. We will be examining the historical significance of Grace Darling and why it is important we remember her today. The children really shone when we acted, through using freeze frames, the events of that fateful day on Farne Island! Furthermore, we will be comparing the RNLI in the past and present day, to assess how far we have come in our historical journey. We will be completing some stormy sea pictures in art and looking at floating and sinking in science.

We will be celebrating all our achievements that we accomplish over the next term in Celebration Assembly on Friday mornings in the Key Stage 2 Hall.

Helping Us at Home

You can help us at home by hearing us read every night and practising our weekly spellings with us.

For Maths, we would love it if you could do some counting backwards and forwards to 100 with your children. In Year 1, our children are also expected to be able to count 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Thank you for everything you do already. From Miss Fowler-Hill and Mrs Monaghan.
