We love learning about new things and we are very friendly and caring.

In our marvellous classroom, we have different areas to support our learning. Our role play area is linked to our topic this half term and is currently an underground train station. It’s just like the underground in London! It’s where we can use our imaginations to travel anywhere we want. We also enjoy role playing lots of different people. Our reading area is the waiting area for the train and we enjoy reading books while we wait. We take lots of our learning outside which means we have a lovely large space to enjoy learning in. We will be completing practical maths and science activities outside. There is even a science investigation we are going to do about the size of raindrops. So not even the weather can stop our learning.

Our P.E day is currently Wednesday and we need to have our PE kits in school for this.

What are we learning:

In our English lessons, we will have the opportunity to read lots of different styles of writing such as Fiction, Non-fiction and Poetry. To help stimulate and engage us to write, we will read and explore the events and characters in a variety of picture and story books. This will help us to use our imagination and create our own fabulous writing. In Year 1 we are working very hard to remember to use capital letters and full stops and finger spaces in our sentences. We are also working hard to make sure that our handwriting is neat and our letters are formed correctly. We also try to use the conjunction ‘and’ in our sentences as well as exciting adjectives to make our writing even more special.

In Mathematics we are starting to learn about addition, subtraction and place value. We will begin to order numbers and to find one more and one less than a number. To help us with our addition and subtraction, we will be using counters and number lines to count forwards or backwards. In Big Maths we will be linking our learning to our story this term, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. We will begin by learning about shape and measure and asking questions such as ‘who has the heaviest chair? How can we measure it? In our mental arithmetic we will be learning to count all the way up to 100, forwards and backwards. We will also begin to count in 2’s and 10’s.

Our current topic is ‘Bright Lights Big Cities’. We are learning all about big cities, in particular, London. During our topic launch day we experienced life as a queen and had a royal tea party. It was so much fun and we got to eat some delicious cakes! We will be learning all about special landmarks in London, transport and The Royal Family. We will also be learning about the UK as a whole, including countries and flags of the UK.

Helping us at home:
You can help us at home by listening to us read at least three times a week and practising our weekly spellings with us.
For Maths we would love if you could help your children to count forwards and backwards to 100. We will also begin to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Thank you for your continued support with your child’s learning.
